He was the unlikliest of pop stars
He was the most reticent of cultural icons
He always wore baggy T-shirts & jeans in concert
He had a strained,weatherworn style

He was quoted in one interview as saying “I feel like I’m stumbling along and a lot of people are watching me or stumbling along with me or allowing me to stumble for them”
He died Aug 9th 1995,a week after his 53rd birthday at a rehab center in Forrest Knous CA
The news of his death set off waves of emotional reactions
He said in his last interview with Rolling Stone magazine “I’m hoping to leave a clean field-nothing,not a thing. I’m hoping they burn it all with me. I’d rather have my immortality here while I’m alive. I don’t care if it lasts beyond me at all. I’d just as soon it didn’t.”
He was born in 1942 in San Francisco’s Mission district
His father Jose (Joe) was a Spanish immigrant

His older brother accidentally lopped off part of his middle finger while chopping wood
His 1st instrument was an accordian,which he begged his mother to swap for an electric guitar
He began his career playing folk music in the early 60’s
He formed a Jug band in 1963
They played blues,country & folk music
After the Beatles hit America with R&R the band changed to an electric unit whose band name began with a “W”
The band,like many others at that time,began attending acid parties
The band made music that epitomized psychedelia
This band had the biggest prolong fan reaction in pop music history
In 1984 this guitarist/singer was so into drugs he no longer played like he even cared
His band had only ONE top ten hit,yet they were very popular
