Can You Still Be Hired as a Firefighter in Northern California With a History of Drug Use?

Question by answernewby: Can you still be hired as a firefighter in Northern California with a history of drug use?
My boyfriend has experimented with drugs (when he was in college and for a few years after college) and now really wants to be a firefighter. Before he starts taking the required classes he wants to know if he is even going to be eligible. He lives near San Jose but he would be open to working anywhere near San Jose, San Francisco, or Gilroy/Santa Cruz. He no longer does any drugs and he has had a good job for the past 5 years – he is also in really good physical shape. He doesn’t have any other negative things on his record – no criminal activity, no violence, no credit issues, etc.

Thank you!

Generally – no. The competition for these positions is strong enough that the fire departments will be able to choose people without a drug history.

Who wants a druggie as a firefighter anyway?
