Question by Dreamer: Difficult decision to make – – please help?
I am a 37 year old man currently studying in a Spanish language school in San Pedro, Costa Rica, near the capital of San Jose. I have been here for one week now, and have two more weeks to go. The man and woman who own the house are cordial and accommodating, and the house has WIFI, which makes calling my parents who live in the United States absolutely free via internet.
However, there is one issue that has been REALLY weighing on my mind. There is this gay guy who is also staying in this house who is in a room above mine, and I definitely think he’s a big cocaine user!!! He rubs and snorts his nose, and frequently sneezes when he’s in his room by himself. Nobody else comes to his room that I have seen. I, on the other hand, have never used illegal drugs in my life, and hate being around them or people who use them.
What is really weird, though, is that he will not even acknowledge me whatsoever. He will not look at me at all, nor talk with me (which is fine, because I want nothing to do with a friggin’ coke head). However, the people who own the house, who constantly profess the power of Christianity and Jesus and all of that think that this guy is the end all and be all. Even though I haven’t seen actual drug use taking place, I can smell an odd odor in the air at times, and I can almost bet that he’s a friggin’ druggie! The school doesn’t seem to mind him, either, because he apparently pays them quite a bit of money for tuition and lessons, and they seem very happy that he is a customer of their language school, which seems to be legit. From what I have been told, this is his third time here, and that he has spent several months here in Costa Rica the past; thus, no one wants to refuse his money.
What should I do? If I bring up the fact that he’s a druggie, I might be the recipient of retaliation. If I move out, the next host home might not be as accommodating, and I might lose the seemingly normal home environment that I live in. By the way, the man and woman who own the house think this guy “hung the moon,” and often I feel like the red-headed stepchild. Perhaps they like his money, or maybe there’s something that I’m just not aware of.
