Imagine being 16 and having your whole life in front of you now imagine an illegal immigrant is responsible driving without a license or insurance and with a 0.28 blood alcohol level — more than triple the state limit of 0.08. how would you feel if this was your child ?Imagine being 16 and having your whole life in front of you.

Now imagine being hit head on by a drunken driver and left in a crumpled car by the side of the road. Your whole life has just come to a screeching halt. That’s exactly the experience one Tracy resident went through when she was just 16.

Lori Ann Martin was a small town girl, deeply rooted in the community where her parents grew up and her grandparents settled. In fact, two streets in the city of Tracy (Travao Lane and Alzira Court) are named after her grandfather and grandmother.

Martin was popular in school and a straight-A student. She played volleyball and softball and attended all the local football games and dances. She was the picture of an all-American girl.

Then one night, during her junior year of high school, everything changed.

She was headed back from work at 8:15 p.m. April 10, 1992, traveling along Grant Line Road. Another car that was headed in the opposite direction, with a drunken driver at the wheel, hit her head on. The driver was an illegal immigrant, driving without a license or insurance and with a 0.28 blood alcohol level — more than triple the state limit of 0.08.

At the site of this gruesome accident scene, Martin was found unconscious, unresponsive, and still strapped into her seat belt. Extrication took 40 minutes using the Jaws of Life. She was then taken to the hospital by Medi-Flight. She suffered numerous injuries, including a swollen brain, several broken and dislocated bones, a collapsed lung, cracked ribs, torn tendons, multiple fractures, a lacerated liver and was paralyzed on her left side. While still in the hospital, Martin slipped into a coma for 100 days and developed a high fever which led to the loss of her hearing.

Martin’s recovery time was extensive. She spent a month at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton and then went to Golden State Rehabilitation Hospital in San Ramon. She spent the next eight months relearning how to walk and talk. Her next stop was in San Jose at a facility called Learning Services; several months later she returned to Tracy and started therapy at Sutter Tracy Hospital.

More than a decade later, Martin’s therapy is still ongoing, yet she has been able to give back to the community in many ways. For the past few years, Martin has worked with the Tracy branch of the California Highway Patrol during its annual “Every 15 Minutes” campaign. This anti-drinking and driving program also enlists the help of the Tracy police and fire departments, American Medical Response, Sutter Tracy Hospital, local judges, tow companies and local high school students. It takes a hard look at the aftermath of a drinking and driving car accident, through intense moments and realistic surroundings.

How come when an illegal causes medical injuries they are not required to pay restitution ? If this was an illegal would lawyers not step forward free of charge to collect millions ?http://www.insidebayarea.com/trivalleyherald/localnews/ci_11898593

ok so heres a ? for ya, how would you feel if the person was not an illegal?? I feel it shouldnt make a difference if you are illegal or legal, you almost killed some 1 and was driving drunk. These are thje kind of people that I feel should not be allowed a path to citizenship. Its not ok to drink and drive PERIOD! but im tired of people blaming illegals for all the crime!! EVERYONE commits crimes not just illegals! people are just so damn ignorant that they want to blame an illegal!
