Would You Be in Favor of Government Restrictions Over Who Can Have Children?
Question by Jim: Would You Be In Favor of Government Restrictions Over Who Can Have Children?
Do you think it will be a good idea if the gov’t were to issue a criteria like this that people must follow in order to have children:
– both parents must have jobs (or one parent with enough income to raise a family)
– both parents must have no criminal background or any hospitalized treatment for mental problems
– if one or both parents have been hospitalized for mental problems they must go on another psychological evaluation
– both parents must have no history of alcohol or drug addiction
– both parents must have a physical exam to see to determine their health

I agree with Government restrictions on parenting. Why is it that we need a drivers license, or a marriage license, but anyone can have a child?
There would be little to no child abuse or neglect if we had to earn the right to have a child.
In the USA, PETA gives animals more rights than children have.
No, as what will happen to those who have kids against the law?
I think the way things are done now are good.
You are free to have a raise children until your ability to do so is in question.
And the above answerer is incredibly naive to think that only poor people with a bad history abuse/neglect children…
– Both parents dont need to have jobs to raise a happy child. Money isnt everything.
– So say if you were arrested for shoplifting at 16….you cant then have kids at 30 years old? Bit stupid Or if you had depression you cant have kids? Thats ridiculous as then most of the world couldnt have kids…
– They are evaluated before release.
– Again, mistakes shouldnt stop you from turning your life around and having the family you want. Not being able to have that family will drive many back to drink/drugs
– Why?
These are stupid…
having a child is a right not a privileged the government have no right to say who can and can not have children. I would be against it
No. The government is already in places it doesn’t belong. How would they decide how much income is enough? My husband and I made it for 2 years on about $ 25,000 a year. That probably wouldn’t be considered enough but you learn to budget.
I don’t agree some of your points, but overall I think there should be more regulation when it comes to families.
See I think this would help so much but hurt even more.
It is one of those things where either way it is bad.
I wish parents had the sense to acknowledge these ideas and see if they are capable of becoming parents by themselves. So many poor kids are being neglected or harmed because.
But we should not live in a dictatorship
I don’t agree with this, what would be next…testing our dna to make sure our kids aren’t going to grow up with mental illness, heart problems, diabetes, etc.? No the government does not belong in the business of restriction of reproductive rights.
I agree with you, but don’t think it would ever happen in the US where we have a democracy.
okay, I do believe parents needs a certain amount of money, however, lots of money isn’t everything. Parents before us managed on a pittance.
So a 14 year old shoplifter wouldn’t be able have kids? Or if a 15 year old took an overdose and ended up spending a few days in hospital under suicide watch they would be banned from EVER having kids?
If someone has a mental problem they are likely to have some form of help. However, why on earth would you make them feel even worse? Just because you have depression, or other mental illnesses it doesn’t mean you’re remotely dangerous!
You seem to assume that people cannot give up.
Once again, this is intrusive and ridiculous.
