Colombians arrested, 2 tons of cocaine seized in Costa Rica – San Jose, Costa Rica (NTN24) Costa Rica’s National Coast Guard Service and police seized about two tonnes of cocaine and arrested five people, the Public Security Ministry said during a news conference on Wednesday (February 1). Authorities seized three suspicious boats in Punta Tigre, close to the border with Panama. Three boats were carrying fuel and the other was loaded with about two tonnes of cocaine divided in nearly 1963 packages. “Evidently this was an operation where intelligence, sea patrolling, a quick response from the National Coast Guard Service and air patrolling to detect fleeing boats resulted in the confiscation of 1963 kilograms of cocaine as the Minister indicated,” deputy security minister, Walter Navarro, told a news conference. Security Minister Mario Zamora, praised the successful operation. “This is an important sign at the beginning of this year which adds to other actions taken by the police which represent heavy blows to drug trafficking and its operation taken by our country.” Two Costa Ricans and three Colombian nationals residing in Costa Rica were arrested. as many as four suspects travelling on board the boat carrying the drugs managed to escape on foot into the mountains next to the coast and are still at large. Officials told a news conference the shipment has a street value of more than million and came from Colombia bound for Mexico. Mexican drug gangs are increasingly using Costa Rica as a pick-up point for South American cocaine
