Coming to Canada for Medical Treatment – Do I Have to Set a Timeline?

Question by ilias: Coming to Canada for medical treatment – do I have to set a timeline?
I am a full citizen but, my father is not, and has recently been diagnosed with cancer and I’m afraid that the treatment back home are very limited. I want to bring him here but have no idea how long he may have to remain in the country for the treatment. What are my options and how do I start this process?

As you are a full citizen, if you have fulfilled residence requirements (you have to have been in the country for a full six months, if you’ve been living elsewhere) you are covered for medical treatment. But if your father is not a citizen, he isn’t eligible for treatment, which means you will have to pay the full cost. Does your father have medical insurance? Sorry – wish I could give you more hopeful information, but the bottom line is, non-citizens don’t qualify, even if their children are Canadians.
