well they try it. find that it helps them feel better, so they continue to use it. soon they use it for everything, they depend on it.

Majority try something and when something triggers a bad event they remember the feeling they received from use of that substance so they decide to use again. Eventually they become dependent on it. Some Psychological addictions, some physical.
