When/how often should I do this? I live in Northern California (San Jose). Also, suggestions on the best types to use are appreciated.

4 times a year, with any commercial lawn fertilizer.

You likely have cold weather grass. So, you really only need to fertilize in the spring and fall. You can fertilize up to 4 times, but you’ll be cutting your grass far more often. Scott’s is the best known brand of fertilizer and it provides a 4-step annual program that includes other lawn treatments. Step 1, for example, includes a pre-emergent crabgrass treatment.
