I work at a suicide/crisis line.
Normally, people who call the line are reaching out for help. Talking with someone can help because a trained professional knows the things to say or the questions to ask to help the person through whatever they’re going through. Also, sometimes just having someone to talk to can be a deterrent to suicide, because people who want to commit suicide are often lonely and feel as if there is no hope.

I think talking to someone about your problems can be therapeutic and make you feel less alone. It may help you to feel like someone actually does care about you. Sometimes people feel like they have nobody who understands and like they are completely isolated in the world. I think talking about your problems with someone else can help you reason things out or consider other perspectives you might not have thought of before.
With some forms of depression, it is something that the person may have to work out for themselves with time. More serious depression may require medical examination and treatment. There are a lot of other things that can be done as well.
I don’t think that people are suggesting that talking to someone is the sole solution, but rather one way of helping to cope with depression and helping the person get through their problems.
